New Paramus mall cameras may provide blueprint for security across U.S.

(01/13/05) PARAMUS ? New Jersey officials say new, high-tech security cameras in Paramus may hold the key to increased safety at U.S. malls and schools.

Under the Model Mall program, new security cameras will be installed at various locations within the busy Garden State Plaza mall in Paramus. Experts say these cameras will feed footage to computers that can actually detect questionable activities, such as suspicious individuals or packages that have been in one place for an extended period of time.

Law enforcement officials say the $1 million mall security plan is just the beginning. A system using the same technology will eventually be installed in Paramus schools. Those involved with the project say the city of Paramus received the technology first because of its high population density.
