Public school enrollment hurting bottom line of Keansburg day care center

(01/13/05) KEANSBURG ? A Monmouth County private day care center is encountering a fiscal crisis as more area parents opt to send their children to public school.

St. Ann?s Child Care Center gets high marks from many parents in Keansburg. However, 3-year-old and 4-year-old children have been able to attend public school free of charge since the town became an Abbot district. Employees say many parents have been taking advantage of the free schooling, which has led to a steady enrollment drop at St. Ann?s.

A spokesperson for the 21-year-old facility says St. Ann?s was the only Keansburg day care center before the town became an Abbot district. While community donations have helped the center, administrators say they still need supplies.
