Suspected carjacker gets shock when victim fights back in Lakewood

(01/17/05) LAKEWOOD ? Police in Lakewood say a woman did everything in her power to make sure she did not become the victim of a carjacking.

According to police, 49-year-old Gerald Bruce Bennett tried to carjack the woman near a grocery store in Lakewood Plaza. Investigators say when Bennett attempted to enter the vehicle, however, the owner began fighting back. A spokesperson for the Lakewood Police Department says the potential victim caused such a fuss that she frightened Bennett away.

Bennett was later apprehended when an eyewitness alerted a nearby police officer to the situation. Investigators say the suspect pulled a knife out on the officer and had to be disarmed.
