Man on trial for Rutgers rape found guilty of lesser charges
(01/18/05) NEW BRUNSWICK ? A split jury returned a partial verdict Tuesday in the trial of a man accused of being involved in a robbery and rape incident near Rutgers University.
Nineteen-year-old Timothy Heard was convicted in New Brunswick of conspiracy and burglary for a robbery that took place at apartments near the Rutgers University campus. However, jurors acquited Heard of aggravated sexual assault. They also could not agree on other serious charges, including weapons possession and armed robbery.
Prosecutors told the jury that Heard and three others had broke into the apartments and sexually assaulted three women. The three other individuals involved in the assault all pleaded guilty to the crime.
Prosecutors must now decide if they want to retry Heard on the more serious charges.
