Muslim leaders in Jersey City call for end to bias in shadow of family's murder

(01/19/05) JERSEY CITY ? Muslim leaders in Jersey City defended their religion?s image Wednesday in response to rumors that a family?s murder was religiously motivated.

Four family members were found dead in their home last week with their bodies bound and their throats slashed. Speculation has run rampant that the killings may have been retaliation for anti-Muslim remarks posted on the Web by the family?s father, Hossam Armanious. The slain family members were Coptic Christians.

At a news conference originally planned as a show of Christian-Muslim solidarity, Muslim leaders spent time defending their religion. One representative said the Muslim religion should not be tarnished based on the actions of a few individuals.

Members of the Hudson County Prosecutor?s Office say robbery may have been a motive for the killings. They also say they have no evidence linking the murders to religion.
