Student athletes stunned after Montclair State cuts five varsity sports
(01/20/05) MONTCLAIR ? Several student athletes at Montclair State University say they are stunned and embarrassed by the school?s decision to eliminate five of its varsity sports programs.
Men?s lacrosse, men?s cross country, men?s wrestling, women?s cross country and women?s tennis are all being reclassified as club sports. Student athletes learning of the decision say they are devastated by the news. Many of those affected by the reclassification believe the move was motivated by money.
Vice President of Student Development Karen Pennington says the decision was mostly based on both field availability and the availability of personnel. According to Pennington, the reclassification will allow the school to better allocate resources as a university.
Some students say they will seriously consider a transfer in light of the school?s recent actions. Since Montclair State is a Division III school, not of its student athletes are on scholarship.
