Newark apartment fire kills elderly woman & her son

Newark firefighters battled a brutal combination of fire and ice in a deadly apartment blaze Sunday morning.

Fire officials say smoke claimed the lives of 85-year-old Angie Malanga and her son in an upstairs apartment on Lake Street near Branch Brook Park. Residents say Malanga was a beloved fixture on the block.

According to fire officials the apartment unit where the fire started suffered the worst damage. Residents of the other three units are not sure how much damage was done to their apartments. Fire officials are still investigating the cause of the blaze. Meanwhile, the Red Cross is working to find temporary shelter for the displaced families.
