Three killed, one seriously injured in Perth Amboy plant blast

(01/25/05) PERTH AMBOY ? Perth Amboy Mayor Joe Vas says three men were killed and another seriously injured in an explosion at the ASCO Acetylene Services plant in Perth Amboy Tuesday morning.

Plant workers say the force of the blast shook the ground and caused debris to fall off nearby buildings. The deadly explosion took the lives of Perth Amboy residents Pablo Murillo, Enio Perez and Edonar Gonzalez-Vasquez. According to investigators, all victims affected by the explosion were thrown several feet. Investigators also say workers were transferring acetylene from a pipe to a container when the deadly incident occurred.

Many workers at the plant tell News 12 New Jersey that the ASCO plant is a dangerous place to work. They say there had been a previous explosion at the facility in 1997, however, police would not comment on that claim.

The injured worker is currently listed in critical condition.
