Opening arguments begin in Barnegat double-murder trial
(01/26/05) TOMS RIVER ? Opening arguments began Wednesday in the case of a man accused of killing a mother and son in Barnegat four years ago.
Prosecutors say Dwayne Gillispie and two others drove to Barnegat from the Bronx to sell guns to Linnelle Michael, one of the victims. According to the prosecution, Gillispie and his accomplices later bound and murdered both Michael and his mother, Christine Staton, as part of a robbery attempt.
Prosecutor Michael Paulhus says Michael was forced to watch Staton?s throat being slashed before he was killed. The defendant?s attorney claims there is no decisive DNA proof placing Gillispie at the scene of the crime.
If Gillispie is found guilty he could face the death penalty.
