Water supply at the heart of West Milford development controversy

? Some residents and officials in the town of West Milford say a proposed housing development would spell disaster for the area?s water supply.

According to West Milford Councilman Bob Nolan, West Milford?s aquifer will not be able to sustain new wells. Nolan and others say they have the scientific proof to back up their statements.

Representatives of developer K. Hovnanian, however, disagree. They say the new wells built along with the development would actually help the groundwater situation.

Township officials say they will take the matter to court if the Department of Environmental Protection approves the project.
