Lakewood father spared jail time in fatal child neglect case
(02/01/05) LAKEWOOD ? A Lakewood father accused of neglecting and killing his 7-month-old baby accepted a plea deal Tuesday that will spare him from going to prison.
Aryeh Katzman pleaded guilty to child neglect after leaving his son, Chaim, in the back seat of a car for five hours while attending class. The temperature in the vehicle reached approximately 90 degrees, resulting in the death of the child. Katzman received a sentence of probation under the parameters of the deal with prosecutors.
Some Lakewood residents were outraged after learning Katzman would not be going to jail. Many people feel the he should have served time as punishment for killing a child. However, a friend of Katzman states the father was disoriented and distraught after being diagnosed with a brain tumor two days before the incident.
Prosecutors say the sentence seemed fair in comparison with other similar cases in New Jersey.
