Authorities say mother beat teen daughter to death with hammer in Roselle Park

The mother of a 14-year-old Roselle Park girl was charged Monday with murdering her daughter by beating her in the head with a hammer and a shovel as she slept.

According to state police, Lynn Giovanni, 45, then attempted to take her own life by crashing her car, but received only minor injuries. State troopers say when they arrived at the scene, Giovanni told them she killed her daughter, Nicole. State police then contacted Roselle Park authorities, who found the teen?s body in her bed.

Nicole Giovanni was a freshman at Roselle Catholic High School. Neighbors say they are shocked such a crime could happen in the area. Authorities say they have no motive in the slaying. Giovanni is being held at Trenton Psychiatric Hospital on $250,000 bail.
