New housing development in Elizabeth opens its doors for lower income families

A new housing development built to offer hope to lower income families in Elizabeth has finally opened its doors.

Portside Commons is located at Second and Bond streets and nearly half of its units have people living in them. Portside Commons is one of the six new developments in the area that will replace the old public housing project that was torn down.

The area, which was notorious for drugs and crime, is now filled with new townhouses that are designed to make the neighborhood safe. Many residents say the neighborhood is more attractive with the new developments.

All of the new developments in the area were made possible through at $30 million federal grant secured by the town during the 1990s.
