Clifton cop accused of masterminding lost cash theft scheme

(02/08/05) CLIFTON ? The Clifton Police Department has arrested one of its officers and accused him of concocting a scheme to wrongfully claim lost money.

Police officials say the money in question was several hundred dollars found by two teenage girls and turned over to authorities. According to investigators, 26-year-old Clifton Police Officer Daniel Silva found out about the cash and devised a plan to get his hands on it. Authorities say Silva had a friend contact the police department and wrongfully claim the money was his property.

Officials within the police department say they became suspicious when the friend could not properly recount the cash denominations or location where the money was found. After an internal affairs investigation, both Silva and his friend were arrested. Silva has been suspended without pay.

If no one claims the money in six months, it will be returned to the girls who found it.
