Church plans face resistance in Rockaway Township

(02/08/05) ROCKAWAY ? Officials of a local church are facing resistance in their efforts to build a new structure for worship in Rockaway Township.

Residents and officials in Rockaway may take Christ Church to court in an effort to get church officials to change their plans. Currently, the organization plans on building a large church on Green Pond Road to help accommodate its 5,000 members. However, some residents feel the new structure is too large and may cause harm to the environment.

A spokesperson for Christ Church says the town?s resistance is nothing more than discrimination against the church. Reverend David Ireland says the proposed site for the structure used to be the location of Agilent Technologies. According to Ireland, no environmental concerns were ever raised when Agilent was operating on the property.
