Residents say latest shooting highlights crime epidemic in Newark

(02/08/05) NEWARK ? Police in Newark are trying to get to the bottom of a drive-by shooting that has left a victim fighting for his life.

According to family members, Martise Martin was gunned down on South 12th Street near the intersection of Central Avenue Tuesday. Martin?s family says he was on his way to the store to get a sandwich when he was shot in the head.

Residents say shootings and crimes have become an unfortunate reality in Newark. A spokesperson for a local activist group says unemployment, poverty and drugs all contribute to a high crime rate in the area.
