Busy week for Red Cross with two fires and a building evacuation

Two fires and a building evacuation have kept the Red Cross busy in Union City and West New York.

The first fire broke out in West New York on Thursday night. Less than 24 hours later, there was another blaze in Union City. Both fires left more than a hundred people homeless.

Six families then had to be evacuated Saturday afternoon from an apartment on Bryant Street in Newark. Residents say they noticed a strange smell coming from the basement. A boiler was being worked on and residents hope to be back in their apartments by Monday.

Many of the victims from the fires were sent to a shelter on Palisades Avenue in Union City. Officials don?t know yet exactly what type of hazardous material condition was found in the building in Newark.
