Cops trying to hunt down Rutgers University charity bandit

(02/15/05) NEW BRUNSWICK ? Police are looking for a thief who stole thousands of dollars collected by Rutgers students to help children with cancer.

Police say the suspect took the funds from the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs between 7:15 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. Monday. Students who stood on street corners with cans to collect the money say they feel violated by the theft. In all, authorities say the bandit made off with more than $8,000 collected as part of a fundraiser for the Institute for Children with Cancer and Blood Disorders.

Investigators say the theft is especially tough to take considering the amount of time and effort students contributed to raising the money. Members of the Rutgers Police Department say they hope the person responsible has a change of heart and returns the money.
