New Jersey businesses feel fiscal strain during NHL freeze
(02/16/05) MOONACHIE ? Business owners who get a regular infusion of customers during hockey games say the cancellation of the NHL season is going to check them square in the wallet.
People working at restaurants that benefit from game day traffic say the lack of hockey has already caused a major fiscal strain. Many customers also admit they don?t patronize many local businesses the way they used to before and after games.
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman announced the complete cancellation of the 2004-2005 season Wednesday afternoon because of an ongoing labor dispute between players and owners. Owners are looking for a measure of cost certainty, however, players were unwilling to agree to the league?s salary cap figure.
Despite the decline in game day customers, many area business owners say they will persevere and survive their current economic hardships.
