Cops say Wharton trio busted for family run gambling operation

(02/16/05) WHARTON ? Police in Wharton say they?ve broken up a profitable family run gambling ring that was run out of a Park Street home.

According to police, Alan Bone, his girlfriend, Carol Howard, and his son, Alan Junior, were taking bets and running a book-making operation out of their basement. Bone?s neighbors are shocked, saying he is an active member of the community who heads the Wharton American Legion. Area residents also say Bone Sr. was instrumental in the building of the town?s Civil War monument.

Police officials now say they will be focusing their investigation on the individuals who placed the bets because gambling rings are usually linked to organized crime. In addition to the Wharton trio, investigators have apprehended two other men who they say collected bets and took wagers for the Bone operation.
