Student influx may force Trenton to bus pre-school students next year

(02/17/05) TRENTON ? Representatives of the Trenton School District say they may be forced to start busing pre-school students this September.

According to Trenton school officials, the potential closing of catholic schools in Mercer County could add up to an additional 400 students to the district next school year. Those who work in the district say the sudden influx of students could put a major strain on Trenton?s education facilities. A day care component to Trenton?s pre-school program has also become a major incentive for parents to enroll their children in the public school system.

Trenton School Superintendent James Lytle says he is not eager to bus young students, but he says he may not have any other choice. However, education officials are exploring all options.
