Future firefighters get dose of reality in Middletown

(02/22/05) MIDDLETOWN ? Jersey City Fire Department trainees got a dose of realistic training Tuesday as they near the end of a six-week course at the Middlesex Fire Academy.

During drills, the trainees fine-tuned their craft by learning to operate in real flames and smoke. It is in the most hectic of environments that the firefighters will be expected to operate hoses, search for victims and rescue the injured. Many of the recruits say they have made great strides in working in the chaos of a fire scene.

The 26 Jersey City recruits, along with a recruit from Secaucus, will graduate March 4.
