New Jersey residents warned to beware of dubious tax preparers
(02/23/05) WEST PATERSON ? As a Montville tax consultant prepares to be sentenced on federal charges for defrauding clients, many New Jersey residents are being urged to watch who they trust to handle their taxes this year.
Although several options are available to people when choosing a tax preparer, there are ways residents can protect themselves from a business that might take advantage of its customers. Experts suggest checking a potential preparer?s history with the Better Business Bureau to make sure there are no blemishes on their record.
Residents are also urged to make sure the person they entrust with their taxes is an enrolled agent, certified public accountant or a tax attorney. Anyone who suspects fraud is encouraged to call the IRS at 1-800-829-0433 and alert them to the suspicious activity.
