Young schoolchildren may be prime recruiting targets for Trenton gangs

(02/25/05) TRENTON ? A community activist in Trenton says area street gangs may be targeting recruits in the 7, 8 and 9-year-old age ranges.

According to Juan Martinez, of the People for the Revitalization of the South Ward, graffiti painted by students at Dunn Middle School is used to broadcast their desire to become a gang member. Martinez believes young people are being used as a ?farm team? for the notorious Bloods street gang.

Trenton School District officials say they are paying serious attention to the gang recruitment issue. According to education officials, every effort is made to decipher the graffiti and make sure it is removed quickly.
