Internet video appears to show Brick teacher's anthem tantrum

(03/01/05) BRICK ? A video has surfaced on the Internet that apparently shows a Brick teacher yelling at a student for not standing during the national anthem.

The video appears to show teacher Stuart Mantel saying, ?now stand and keep your mouth shut? to a student who refused to stand for the national anthem. The video, recorded by a student with a camera cell phone, was taken in December and recently discovered on the Internet. The video also appears to show Mantel threatening to pull the chair out from underneath the student.

According to Mantel, the video is not an accurate portrayal of the exchange because the footage has been tampered with. However, the issue has raised debates about forcing students to stand for the national anthem and about allowing sophisticated camera phones in school.

School board officials say students cannot be forced to stand for the anthem. They also say discussions will be held about bringing recording devices into school. Mantel has not been suspended from his teaching duties, but the student who recorded the incident was suspended for 10 days.
