Firefighters battle both flames and broken hydrants during Jersey City blaze

(03/02/05) JERSEY CITY ? Quick-thinking firefighters had to act fast Tuesday night to battle both flames and broken fire hydrants on Van Reipen Avenue in Jersey City.

Upon arriving at the scene of a blaze, firefighters realized a nearby hydrant was broken. After discovering a hydrant down the street was out of service as well, witnesses say the firefighters tapped into a hydrant one-tenth of a mile away on Tonnelle Avenue. Despite their efforts, however, the blaze managed to leave those who lived in the structure homeless.

A spokesperson for United Water says out of the 3,600 hydrants in Jersey City, only 10 are not functioning. However, officials at the water company say they rely on the fire department?s information when it comes to frozen fire hydrant locations.
