Fire rips through four-story apartment building in Newark

Authorities say a fire tore through a four-story apartment building on Meeker and Elizabeth avenues in Newark Thursday morning.

According to fire officials, the blaze started on the fourth floor of a corner building and spread to the attached apartment building. The damage was so widespread that the roof collapsed. A fire chief said fighting the flames was made more difficult by the extreme cold.

Some residents of the apartment building are staying with relatives or in hotels. The Red Cross is helping the rest of the families who are staying at a nearby school. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
