Hopewell police fear town budget could reduce their force

Hopewell Township is trying to draw the line when it comes to taxes. Officials are trying to decide if they should cut the township?s police force by 21 percent.

Hopewell Township police worry that cutbacks could cause safety concerns. For example, Route 31 is a heavily traveled road in Hopewell. If there was an accident, all officers might need to respond, which would leave the township unprotected.

The current budget would cause homeowners to pay an additional $250 a year. Hopewell Mayor Arlene Kemp said she will continue to meet with department heads to see if they can come up with other cost cutting measures to prevent layoffs.
