Three in Bergen County charged after accidental death is ruled murder

(03/07/05) GARFIELD ? Prosecutors in Bergen County say a 2003 death case that was initially labeled accidental was actually a homicide.

The victim in the case, Ralph Ludvik, died from a drug overdose. While investigators first thought the mixture of heroin and cocaine in Ludvik?s bloodstream was an accidental overdose, they now say three of his relatives were responsible for his death.

Ludvik?s brother-in-law, James Gerritsen, and his stepson, Mark Aquilina, were in court Monday to answer to charges stemming from the incident. The victim?s wife is also charged in the case, but she is serving time for an unrelated matter and did not appear in court.

Prosecutors say they believe the killing was motivated by money. Both suspects who appeared in court are being held on $1 million each.
