Senate committee approves New Jersey lieutenant governor legislation
(03/07/05) TRENTON ? A voting session turned somewhat tense Monday as a bill to create the position of lieutenant governor in New Jersey passed a Senate committee.
After passing the Assembly, many of the legislation?s supporters thought the committee vote would be quick and easy. However, the bill initially received two votes from the five-member committee because two others abstained. Later in the day, panel members said they had to re-educate a member on the legislation. After the lesson, the bill was approved 3-0.
The measure now needs the approval of the full Senate before it goes before Acting Governor Richard Codey. The governor says he will give the bill his signature.
