Parents in Elizabeth hope fundraising push saves Catholic school
(03/07/05) ELIZABETH ? Some parents in Elizabeth met Monday to discuss a fundraising push that may keep an 86-year-old Catholic school open.
Officials at the Bender Memorial Academy, which is run by the Benedictine Order of Nuns, say dropping enrollment is forcing them to close the school?s doors for good in June. Parents with children in the school say they are shocked at the pending closure. A group of parents now wants to raise $150,000 in the hopes of keeping the facility open.
Religious leaders could not be reached to comment on the possibility of keeping the school open. Parents in charge of the fundraising effort say all donated checks will not be cashed unless the Benedictine Order of Nuns cancels the closure.
