DEP orders cleanup of controversial Toms River landfill

(03/08/05) TOMS RIVER ? The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection wants Ciba Specialty Chemicals to clean up a controversial landfill in Toms River.

The DEP is ordering the company to remove drums, which many say are causing groundwater contamination, from its landfill known as Cell-1. State officials say Ciba could be hit with legal action if it does not comply with their demand. Many residents who live in the area say they are thrilled action is finally being taken against the company.

Representatives at Ciba say the drums in the landfill have two layers of liner to make sure they don?t leak. However, DEP officials say they believe the drums are leaking dangerous chemicals into the surrounding area.
