Turtles may stop construction of Chatham playing fields

(01/11/06) CHATHAM ? A pair of woodland creatures may stop the development of two new ballfields in Chatham Township and Chatham Borough.
Plans for recreational playing fields are on hold after a biologist recently spotted two wood turtles, an endangered species, in the area. The endangered status of the animals could put an end to the ballfield projects. While nearby homeowners are thrilled the wooded area may be saved, supporters of the project say the area desperately needs more recreational playing fields.
Project supporters hope a compromise can be reached. Township and borough officials plan to meet later this month to discuss the issue.
