Posted: Updated:

? Police are investigating a fire in Sayreville that claimed the life of a 5-year-old boy who was home alone at the time.

Police say a young neighbor was the first person to see the fire on Deerfield Road. He was playing outside when he saw smoke coming from his neighbor?s home and called police. Firefighters found the 5-year-old boy unconscious at the scene. He was rushed to Perth Amboy hospital and later pronounced dead.

Neighbor Mary Rhatican says it was hard for the boy?s father to find childcare. Authorities say Kevin Sturgis was at work when the fire broke out at his home. He has not been charged.
