First lady delivers millions in funding to Newark educators

(03/16/06) NEWARK ? First lady Laura Bush personally delivered a $14 million check to educators of the Newark School District Thursday.
Newark school officials say the funds, which are part of the Striving Readers Program, will be used to implement a major literacy program within the district. School Superintendent Marion Bolden says each student has specific needs, and they hope the new program will help address those needs effectively.
In addition to delivering the funds, Bush met with sixth-graders at Avon Avenue School. She watched the students complete a composition, then spoke with them about their favorite books.
