Posted: Updated:

A firefighter battling a house fire and the elderly woman he was trying to save both died Tuesday morning in Franklin Township. Officials say 21-year-old volunteer firefighter Kevin Appuzio was attempting to rescue the elderly woman trapped in a house on Whittier Avenue. They believe the floor may have collapsed, causing Appuzio and the woman to plunge into the basement where they became trapped. Appuzio was also a student at Rutgers University and a paid EMT for the school. Neighbors say the woman?s husband was rescued and is doing OK. Another firefighter was injured after falling off a ladder.
