Procrastinators pack New Jersey post offices on tax deadline day

(04/17/06) BRICK ? Thousands of procrastinating tax filers flooded post offices throughout New Jersey Monday.
Many last-minute filers are trying to get their paperwork in the mail before the midnight deadline. While some residents sent out their returns weeks ago, others say they just couldn?t part with their money that soon. The IRS says approximately 400,000 people wait until the last minute to file their returns in New Jersey. An additional 290,000 request a six-month extension.
Those dragging their feet when it comes to taxes shouldn?t expect any sympathy from the post office. Since April 15 fell on a Saturday, residents had a couple extra days to get their returns in the mail. Due to the extension, many post offices aren?t staying open late for last-minute filers. None of the post offices in New Jersey will be open until midnight.
