Newark mayor-elect beefs up security detail after assassination plotPosted: Updated:
? Mayor-elect Cory Booker (D-Newark) had noticeably beefed up security at an event Saturday after an alleged plot to kill him was revealed.
The state police confirm that an informant told them Blood gang members obtained an assault rifle with a silencer to assassinate the mayor-elect. Authorities say gang members believe Booker will interfere with their drug dealings. Booker says he will not be intimidated or shy away from a new agenda for the city.
Many Newark taxpayers tell News 12 New Jersey they do not believe the threats are credible. Still, the Essex County prosecutor has ordered around-the-clock protection for Booker.
