Newark's mayor-elect addresses deadly violence in area

Posted: Updated:

One person was killed and eight others injured in a rash of shootings in Newark Sunday night.

Mayor-Elect Cory Booker addressed the violence during a news conference Monday on Martin Luther King Boulevard. Booker says reducing violence is among his top priorities once he takes office this weekend.

Within his first week Booker says there will be sweeping changes, which includes adding more police officers and working to cut back on repeat offenders. He says many of those involved in the rash of recent shootings have a criminal record.
