Federal agents disrupt terrorist plot against PATH tunnelsPosted: Updated:
(07/07/06) HOBOKEN ? Federal investigators revealed Friday that a terrorist plot targeting PATH tunnels in lower Manhattan had been disrupted.
Initial reports stated the plan involved the Holland Tunnel, but investigators now say the suspects only discussed the PATH system. Federal law enforcement officials say the suspects believed they could flood lower Manhattan by bombing the tunnels. Investigators say the eight suspects were in the late planning stages of the plot and about to start surveillance.
One of the suspects, identified as Assem Hammoud, was taken into custody in Lebanon. Two other individuals were detained elsewhere. Agents say they learned of the plot through Internet chat rooms.
