Severe summer thunderstorms tear through Essex County

(07/19/06) MONTCLAIR ? Essex County residents awoke to find extensive damage in their neighborhoods Wednesday following a round of severe overnight thunderstorms.

Crews were out bright and early to clear away the many trees toppled during the wicked weather. Some of those trees landed on cars and property, causing extensive damage in the process. Many residents were also forced to get through the day without electricity thanks to downed power lines.

Residents say the loud thunder and bright lightening made for some frightening moments during the storm. One man says he sat on the couch holding hands with his wife as the raging weather system passed over his neighborhood. Despite the scary moments and destruction, there have been no reports of injuries.
