Posted: Updated:

The Basking Ridge community is in shock after learning that a reported soccer mom allegedly killed her son and tried to take her own life.

According to the Somerset County prosecutor, William Kimzey called police before 9 p.m. Friday after finding a murder-suicide note from his wife, 44-year-old Denise Volpicelli. Police searched the Linden Street home and found the body of 12-year-old Jack Kimzey in the basement and his mother covered in blood. Authorities believe the boy was suffocated and they say his mother had cuts to her arms and legs. Volpicelli is in fair condition.

Volpicelli faces a charge of first-degree murder. Her bail is set at $200,000, but she is currently under police guard at the hospital.

Neighbors describe Volpicelli as a devoted mother who was involved in her son?s life. She also has a 19-year-old daughter who is reportedly away at college.
