(08/07/06) OAKLAND ? An elderly woman was killed while shopping Monday after a driver smashed her car into a storefront in Oakland.

Police say the victim, identified as Josephine Steidl, was shopping at a stationery store off Ramapo Valley Road when the incident occurred at around 11 a.m. According to investigators, the car smashed through the front of the store and trapped the victim. She later died as a result of her injuries.

Investigators believe the woman driving the car became confused and thought the transmission was in reverse, not drive. The driver did not suffer any injuries.
