Police nab MVC employee in suspected phony ID operationPosted: Updated:
(08/15/06) FREEHOLD ? A Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) employee in Freehold has been arrested and accused of orchestrating a phony license scheme.
Police say Valerie Materia, the second in command at the Freehold MVC, sidestepped recent security measures and made the phony IDs. According to police, Materia teamed up with Elvis Castro to distribute the licenses to illegal immigrants. Investigators say each license cost about $2,300, and the purchases were made in the pizzeria where Castro worked.
Although police say they?ve confirmed 15 cases, they believe as many as 50 bogus licenses could be on the street. Many residents say they are especially concerned about the case in light of the suspected airline terrorist plot in Britain. In response to those fears, MVC officials say their organization is constantly working to prevent and stop fake ID crimes.
