Fire at multi-family home in Englewood kills two, injures four

(08/30/06) ENGLEWOOD ? Two people were killed and four others were injured when flames tore through a multi-family home in Englewood Wednesday morning.
Fire officials say the two deceased victims, and another seriously injured individual, were trapped in a basement apartment. According to investigators, basement apartments typically have only one way to enter and exit the dwelling. That may have left the three individuals with no options for escape as the flame spread around them.
Investigators say the homeowner recently renovated the basement into apartments. However, they say he did not receive the proper permits from the city and the work was never inspected. The seriously injured victim is listed in critical condition in the burn unit at Saint Barnabas Hospital. Three other individuals, including a 14-month-old baby, were treated and released.
