University officials hope new Rutgers-Newark dorms transform campus image

(09/05/06) NEWARK ? Students at Rutgers-Newark moved in to brand new dorms over the weekend, but the facilities aren?t your typical college dorm.
The apartments represent the first new residence halls constructed at the school in 16 years. Some are apartment suites, shared by up to five people, with kitchens and living rooms. School officials invested $51 million in the new University Square building to help solve a yearlong housing shortage. They also hope to make Rutgers-Newark feel more like a traditional college campus, and less like a commuter school.
The street level of University Square also contains several businesses. Retail space is still available, and the university is hoping to get other businesses in the building.
