Wrecked jet, damage drill puts Independence Township to the test

Posted: Updated:

Emergency workers were met by scattered debris from a wrecked jet, victims and large plumes of smoke Saturday as they responded to a drill in Independence Township.

Firefighters, police officers and EMTs sprang into action treating about 100 victims. They also used tracking dogs to locate people who wandered off into the woods in a daze. The victims, which included student volunteers, were treated and rushed to area hospitals while investigators assessed the damage.

The Warren County Office of Emergency Management started planning the drill more than a year ago. Officials say the township is in the direct path of three major airports - Newark Liberty International, JFK International and LaGuardia. They believe simulating the wreck of a 747 due to engine trouble will help the town prepare in the event of a real crash.
