A Rider University freshman died Friday after excessive drinking at a fraternity house on the university's campus, a hospital spokesman said.
Gary Devercelly, 18, of California, died at Capital Health System's Fuld Campus in Trenton. He had been in critical condition in the ICU unit of the hospital.
Lawrence Township police were dispatched to the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity house early Thursday morning on a report of a student vomiting from drinking alcohol. Devercelly and another student, who was also intoxicated, were taken to Fuld for treatment of alcohol poisoning. Devercelly's parents flew in from California to be with their son.
The second student was treated in the emergency room and released. The Mercer County Prosecutor's Office is investigating the incident as a possible hazing situation.
Grief counselors and ministers are on hand at the campus to talk to faculty, students and staff. The university is planning a memorial service for Saturday.
