An East Brunswick High School student is facing criminal charges after allegedly posting a school threat on the Internet.
School officials said someone saw the threat and e-mailed the school. Police then moved in and arrested the 16-year-old boy before classes Monday morning. Police said the threat, which was posted on Facebook.com, claimed the student planned to shoot 35 people at the school before blowing himself up.
Parents said they were notified by the school via a recorded phone message from the principal.
Police searched the teen and his home, but found no weapons. They later determined the threat was a hoax. However, authorities want students to know that threats are taken seriously. The teen has been charged with terroristic threats and false public alarm.
"Right now he's lodged at the Middlesex County Juvenile Detention Center and will remain there until he sees a family court judge," Lt. William Krause said.
A spokesperson for the school district said at no time were any students or staff in danger.
