9 arrested following 2 days of fights near Hillside H.S.

Nine people are under arrest, seven of them students, following two days of fighting at or near Hillside High School, including a large brawl in the parking lot of a nearby Dunkin' Donuts.

Rising tensions and fights over "petty things," as one freshman put it, are being blamed for a flurry of fighting that began Wednesday afternoon. According to police, the fight started on the street and ended up on someone's car, with things getting so out of hand, employees at the Dunkin' Donuts locked the doors.

A crossing guard was also roughed up and had her purse snatched. Town and county police began patrolling the area Thursday, with police presence expected to be just as strong Friday.

Officials say the seven students involved have been suspended from school for 10 days. No weapons were used in the fights.
